Love this book! Micha Gayle prives again that he can write male and female characters wirh depth, feelings and humor.

I liked the characters in the book and the way that alternate chapters were told by Kerry and Noah. It is an interesting subject that I find fascinating. I like to watch TV programmes about it and found the book just as absorbing. Well worth reading (but have the tissues handy, if you are anything like me).

wow what a beautiful but heartbreaking novel. This book just covers so many aspects of life that can have a massive impact on people and yet people just go about continuing to live their lives despite having these things happening to/around them.I love how this book delves into the topic of adoption and what can happen when siblings are separated in the process of being removed from their parent. It also deals really well with the circumstances under which a child might be removed from their parents and the steps that could be taken to avoid that. The concept of looking forward and never back is also one that I think isn't dealt with enough in novels and how that can affect people around you so I love the fact that Mike Gayle explores just what that can mean in this book.Noah is a great character to read about and the way he is described, he absolutely leaps of the page and I can imagine him standing here in front of me. He is trying to be a good man, a good husband, a good father and a good son and he can't seem to see why he isn't getting it quite spot on. I loved his integrity and I love how fiercely he really wants to protect those around him but sometimes he just takes the wrong steps to make that happen. I would have loved to have had someone like him in my life!Kerry is also an incredibly strong character, these two main characters really are alike and we get to find out why that might be as the novel progresses. I love the bond that Kerry has with her son Kian and also her friends that she has made as she has been forming and growing her own life. She really does know what it means to multi task and seems to wring the most she can out of life.I loved watching the relationship between Kerry and Noah form over the course of this story, the things that are thrown at each of them and how they each cope with those things. I liked the influence of th3e other people in their lives and as I previously said, I really felt like the issues covered in this novel are so well dealt with.This book really is heartbreaking in parts but so honest and true to life it really is impossible not to read and rate it. Come to this one prepared with tissues but don't be put off picking it up because you'll regret it if you don't read this beautiful story!

Half a World Away by Mike Gayle a five-star read that will stop the world from spinning for the time you read it. I must start this by saying you need to drop everything before you start to read this one, take the day and hide away, go to your comfy place and prepare not to leave until you have finished this one. I didn’t, and spent half a day in a daze, wanting to get back to reading and ignoring everything I could just to get back. Mike Gayle always writes a compelling story, about interesting characters but this one just blew me away with its beauty, he writes about honest characters that show us the reality of life, not the glossy version we usually read about. This novel will appeal to any reader as everyone will be able to get something from it.

In all of my years, there has only been one book that made me well up, and that was Conroy's BEACH MUSIC. And then HALF A WORLD AWAY came along. I've been a fan of Mike Gayle since reading his first novel many years ago, and have read everything since. It's an interesting progression to watch over time, as it seems his books have become more heartfelt as time progressed. HALF A WORLD AWAY, the story of Noah and Kerry, is probably his most heartfelt to date. Not only a journey of Noah coming to terms with who he is, Gayle's newest novel teaches us the importance of family and surrounding ourselves with people we love. I thought that THE MAN I THINK I KNOW was his best book, and then this one came along. Gayle has matured as a writer over the course of his fourteen novels. If one of his novels doesn't eventually end up on the A-Level reading list, England has another thing coming. Thanks for such a wonderful novel!!

Lawrence of Arabia has become a household name in history. How it came to that is brilliantly set out in `Setting the Desert on Fire` by James Barr:The British needed a counterweight to the caliphate in Istanbul and sided with Sharif Husein, emir of Mecca, who - with British financial and military support - instigated the revolt which ultimately led to the wresting Damascus from the hands of the Turks. T. E. Lawrence, a British Intelligence officer, early realized that guerilla warfare was the only way to deal small but ultimately mortal blows to the otherwise too powerful Turkish forces in Syria and the Hijaz. Thus he started winning various Arab tribes for his cause and attacked the Turkish supply lines on the Hijaz Railways. Supported by General Edmund Allenby's attack on the coast in 1918 T. E. Lawrence finally managed to push up to Damascus with Feisal, one of Sharif Husein's sons.The rewards, territorial gains and independence promised were of a limited nature though since the Sykes-Picot-Agreement already decided on the future spheres of influence between the British and the France (Feisal became king in British controlled Iraq, Abdullah, his brother, king in Transjordan) early during the war.Gripping, hard to put the book away!

Scholarly but very readable account of the Arab Uprising. I liked Barr's extensive use of sources other than T.E. Lawrence. His description of how and why Britain decided to support a backwater Middle Eastern revolt in the first place is very well written. Britain was pouring money into Arabia; without T.E. Lawrence's organizational skills that money would have been wasted, the funds would have been cut off, and the Revolt would have failed. The Arabs may feel they got a raw deal, but it was probably the best deal possible at the time.Those expecting a novel (the cover art may fool you) or an easy read will be disappointed. The title is from Lawrence's description of Emir Feisal in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and Lawrence took the photograph used for the cover. (He used photography as an archeologist and map maker before the war.) The book is well sourced; it has a bibliography, an index, footnotes, maps, and a list of people. The list was very helpful, because this is a story with dozens of characters. Barr inserts little descriptions of places he visited during his research. I found these interesting. Some places haven't changed much in a hundred years; other places (like Aqaba) are completely transformed.Setting the Desert On Fire isn't about Lawrence of Arabia, it is about Britain's role in the Arab Revolt. Lawrence was an important part of the story, so he's used as the fulcrum. The romantic image of Lawrence of Arabia was used to sell the book. This is unfortunate, but I'm glad I wasn't put off by the publisher's marketing.

Well worth the read for several reasons: Gives the reader a better perspective of the extremely complex situation. Includes information from the German side I have not seen before. Provides information on the present state of many historic sites. I would like to see more from the Turk and German side in any future attempts to deal with this. I assume that angle has been written but never published widely in English.Chapter 19 on the Dera episode is perhaps somewhat unkind. Of course one cannot not be perfectly clear on the single missing page in Lawrence's diary. I would have like to have seen photos of the adjacent pages, a mention of the possibility that Mrs. Shaw may have removed it, a mention of evidence going against the author's theory (in that there is a statement of a military doctor who treated Lawrence soon after the Dera incident and there are statements by other colleagues saying that they did not question that the event did in fact occur and why).One never is able to chose the order of their books, but this book is best savored after reading Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1922 Oxford Edition), Safety Last, and Orientations. Better to read the word of TEL's fellow officers before taking on the modern perspective.The author obviously loves his subject and has done his work extremely well.

For anyone who doubts the adage "that those who ignore the lessons of history are condemned to repeat them" then this is the book for them. Barr not only looks at Lawrence's role in the desert revolt of 1917 to 1918 but also the convoluted dealings of Britain and France in the Sykes-Picot accord and its consequences for the Middle East today.The book is well researched with copious notes and references and extensive bibliography. There are also photographs of many of the people and places mentioned in the text. The book examines the reason for Britain's involvement in the region, the tensions between the India Office and its support for the ibn Saud family and the Egypt Office and its support for the ibn Husain family and the tensions between the Arab tribes themselves and the lack of a clear aim for the revolt. It also examines in some detail how the British government wanted to distance itself from the Sykes-Picot accord as the war progressed and the French insistence that it be honoured.The only criticism I have is that the author has a tendency to interpose his own observations of the sites of events in the middle of the text about those events without the benefit of separate paragraph. Apart from this the book is an excellent read and well worth its purchase for anyone interested in the region, the desert revolt or T. E. Lawrence.

This book has good potential, telling the tale of the Arab revolt against the Turks in WWI, but spends too much time describing, in much more than needed detail, the many day to day meetings between this tribal chief and that British officer, who traveled when to where, and which dispatch said this and that to some other diplomat back in France or England or wherever. As a strict history it does cover the subject, but it's a somewhat boring read unless you are really interested in the politics. Recommended with caution.

If you enjoyed the movie "Lawrence of Arabia" or read TE Lawrence' 7 Pillars of Wisdom, then you will really like this book. It gives you the truth of the actual events, combat, and political machinations that created the Middle East of today - and the continuing problems between tribes (now governments) and their origins.Well worth the read.

Ich bin ein großer Klitschko Fan - gleichzeitig bin ich auch selbst Box- und Mentaltrainer und weiß mit wem die Brüder Kltschko im Mentalbereich unter anderem gearbeitet haben. Ich denke für das was Wladimir daher vermutlich über mentale Prozesse wirklich weiß und bzgl. der Werkzeuge, die er in seiner Karriere tatsächlich genutzt hat, ist das Buch ziemlich oberflächlich und eher als Marketing-Werkzeug für seine zukünftigen Trainings und Schulungen gedacht.

Das Buch war für mich eine Fehlinvestition. Ich konnte es nicht zu Ende lesen. Es enthält weder Neues noch sonstige Erkenntnisse, die einem nach vorne bringen. Teilweise werden sogar Managementfehler empfohlen, die jedem Akademiker ins Auge fallen.. Ernste Themen werden wiederholt mit einem uralten Witz unterlegt - nicht einmal die Witze sind gut. Ich kann mich nur wiederholen - es war eine Fehlinvestition. Si tacuisses, philosophus mansisses.

Nett geschrieben mit ein paar guten Pointen, besonders interessant sind auch die biographischen Teile über Wladimir. Aber aus der Management Sicht habe ich mehr erwartet.Das Soll wird meines Erachtens erfüllt, für einen Klitschko ist das ungewohnt wenig Power.

Ohne die Überzeugung, den Kampf auch zu gewinnen, sich also mental stark zu machen, steigt kein Boxer in den Ring. Und das ist im Kern auch die Botschaft von Wladimir Klitschko. Es geht um mentale Stärke. Eine Eigenschaft, die im Management ohne Zweifel auch gefordert ist. Klitschko und seine Autorin Stefanie Bilen nennen es Challenge Management. Ihr Buch sammelt die Erkenntnisse aus der langen und erfolgreichen Karriere des Sportlers, damit Führungskräfte in der Wirtschaft sie ebenfalls nutzen können.ERGOSUM – die Formel des Wladimir KlitschkosExpertise, Richtigkeit, Globalismus, Optimismus, Nachhaltigkeit, Einfachheit und Maximum - die englischen Entsprechungen dieser Begriffe bilden "Ergo Sum". Das bildet die Quintessenz dessen, wonach Klitschko lebt. Und was er auch von seinen Mitarbeitern erwartet. Denn er hat sich bereits früh Gedanken darüber gemacht, was er nach dem Ende seiner Karriere erreichen und aufbauen möchte.Was sich zunächst vielleicht etwas oberflächlich anhört, wird schnell greifbar, wenn Wegbegleiter, allesamt gestandene Unternehmer, von eigenen Erlebnisse und Projekten berichten, die sie mit dieser Formel gelöst haben. Denn Autor und Co-Autorin machen nicht den Fehler, sich seitenlang über die Möglichkeiten und Implikationen der Begriffe Gedanken zu machen. Sie lassen auch andere zu Wort kommen. Dieses Hörbuch ist von Beginn an authentisch, lebensnah und sehr menschlich geschrieben. Die Sicht eines Sportlers und eines Managers wird parallel erzählt und ist sehr interessant, obwohl ich keine sportbegeisterte Person bin. Das Buch motiviert einen aus der eigenen Bequemlichkeit herauszukommen und einfach machen zu wollen. Es zeigt auf, dass man oft Entschuldigungen hat, nicht "Heute" oder "Jetzt" etwas anzupacken und sich auf ein normal nettes Leben ausruht, obwohl viel mehr drin wäre und ist.Fazit, auch für Personen die nicht direkt im Management oder Sportbereich arbeiten oder sich bewegen ist das Buch absolut zu empfehlen und ich Danke Wladimir für dieses sympathische Werk das Lust macht im beruflichen und privaten Besser werden zu wollen!!! Großartig, wie Wladimir Klitschko es als einer von ganz wenigen Spitzensportlern geschafft hat, sich vom Athleten zum Unternehmer zu mausern. Dass ihm dies mit vielen Anstrengungen und vor allem Willensstarke gelungen Ist, beschreibt er sehr eindrücklich und sympathisch in seinem Buch. Empfehlenswert für alle Wirtschaftsinteressierten, unbedingt auch für Nicht-Boxfans.

Habe das Buch innerhalb kurzer Zeit verschlungen. Finde Bücher, die von einer anderen Sichtweise, in dem Fall Sport, den Bereich Management betrachten immer gut. Sehr lesenswert und habe es auch gleich als Geschenk für Freunde bestellt.

Dass er Profi im Sport war, zeigt seine unfassbare Karriere. Dass das Geheimniss seines Erfolges, weit über den "Ring" hinaus geht, erklärt das Buch. Wir haben alle unsere Ziele und auch Kämpfe im Berufsleben. Und wir müssen und wollen uns immer wieder neuen Herausforderungen stellen. Sonst wachsen wir nicht. Tolles Buch!
